Board Certified Dermatologist

Lavanya Krishnan, MD founded Arya Derm in 2017 after practicing dermatology in San Francisco for 3 years. A board certified dermatologist specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Krishnan strives to provide patients with high quality medical care. Her approach combines cutting edge treatments backed by science with a detailed understanding of patient needs.

Originally from Atlanta, Dr. Krishnan completed her undergraduate studies from MIT and attended medical school at Medical College of Georgia and completed her dermatology residency at New York Medical College. When not in the office, Dr. Krishnan enjoys traveling and exploring the world with her husband and young daughter.

Board Certified Dermatologist

Meghan Hession, MD joined Arya Derm after practicing in San Mateo for 3 years. A board certified dermatologist, Dr. Hession is well-versed in medical and cosmetic dermatology. She believes strongly in empowering her patients with the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy, youthful appearance for their busy lifestyles.

Originally from Boston, Dr. Hession completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. She attended medical school at Columbia University and completed her dermatology residency at Boston University. An avid runner and cyclist, Dr. Hession leads an active lifestyle outside of work. She has completed a number of marathons and long-distance bike rides. During the winter, you’ll find her on Lake Tahoe's slopes; summers are spent biking, hiking and enjoying everything the Bay Area has to offer.

Appointments & Insurance

How do I book an appointment?
It’s easy – request an appointment online or give us a call at 415-329-5100. We’re happy to help!

Does your office accept insurance?
Yes. We strive to be as accessible as possible and we have in-network credentials for a few select insurance plans. Cosmetic services generally aren’t covered by insurance.

Which insurance plans do you accept?
We’re proud to work with Medicare and the following PPO plans:
— Aetna
— Anthem Blue Cross
— Blue Shield of California
— Blue Cross Blue Shield (out of state plans)
— Cigna
— First Health

What if I have an insurance plan not mentioned above?
If you have an insurance that’s not included in the above mentioned list, then we are an out of network provider. You’ll be responsible for the full cost of your visit. We’re more than happy to submit claims to your insurance carrier on your behalf for potential reimbursement. If your plan has out of network benefits, we’ll refund you for any reimbursement we receive.

If I’m using my insurance, what is my out of pocket cost?
Although we do our best to check your insurance eligibility and verify your benefits prior to your appointment, we can’t guarantee that the information you receive will be accurate. Ultimately, it’s your responsibility to understand your insurance benefits and your insurance company will determine your patient responsibility. We’re always here to help, but if you need specific information about your plan and benefits, we recommend that you contact the phone number on the back of your insurance card.

Policies & Procedures

Why do you need my credit card on file?
We keep a credit card on file to make your experience seamless and to save trees. Oftentimes, there is a small balance remaining after a visit which is not completely covered by your insurance provider.

It’s no different from keeping your credit card on file with Uber/Lyft or providing your credit card number when you make a hotel reservation. We will email you a invoice with PDF explaining these charges 5 days before charging your credit card. If you prefer to pay with a different card, you can do so online.

For cosmetic services, payment is due in full at the time of service.

Do you store credit cards securely?
Absolutely. Credit card information is stored in our PCI-compliant payment gateway, which employs the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry. Once entered, our staff cannot access your credit card number – only the last 4 digits are visible. You’re of course welcome to change the card on file at any time, just let us know.

What is your cancellation policy?
In order to preserve the integrity of our schedule and to reserve each individual patient’s full appointment time with our doctor, we require that you notify us at least 1 business day prior to your scheduled appointment if you need to cancel or reschedule. We charge a $100 dollar no-show fee if you miss your scheduled visit and fail to notify us one full business day prior to your scheduled appointment. For example, if your appointment is on Monday at 10AM, we require that you notify us by Friday at 10AM in order to avoid the cancellation fee.

Why do you charge a $100 no-show fee?
Trust us: the last thing we want to do is collect a no-show fee. We’d much rather you show up for your scheduled appointment or, if something comes up, notify us at least 1 business day in advance. As a small, startup practice operating in an expensive market, it’s critical for us to maintain the integrity of our schedule. We never double-book appointment slots. When we receive advanced notice from you that you can no longer make your appointment, it allows us to accommodate patients with urgent medical needs. No-shows prevent those patients from being seen. We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

What if I’m late?
If you are more than 10 minutes late to your visit, we’ll do our very best to accommodate you. We hope you understand that you may have an extended wait time. In the event that we can’t accommodate you, we’ll help you reschedule to the soonest available appointment time.

Products & Services

Are you a Medical Spa?
No. All medical visits and major procedures – like lasers, injectables, surgeries and excisions – are performed by a board-certified dermatologist. Board-certified dermatologists are certified by the American Board of Dermatology after passing the board examination and completing an intense, highly competitive dermatology residency. We highly recommend that you see a board certified dermatologist for your medical skincare needs. For cosmetics, we recommend seeing a board certified dermatologist or a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Although a number of “medical spas” offer cosmetic treatments for cheaper prices, what they often fail to tell you is that these services are usually performed by non-physicians, or by physicians who are not board certified in dermatology or plastic surgery. What cosmetic services do your dermatologists offer?
Our board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Krishnan and Dr. Hession, perform the following cosmetic services:
— Dermal fillers (Juvederm, Voluma, Radiesse, Restylane)
— Neuromodulators (Botox and Dysport)
— Fraxel®
— Clear + Brilliant ®
— PRP injections for hair loss
— Treatments for age spots
— Treatments for blood vessels and vascular lesions
— Treatments for skin rejuvenation
— Microneedling
— Chemical peels

In addition, our licensed esthetician, Jenny Minner, performs light chemical peels, facials and DermalInfusion treatments.

Do you sell skincare products?
We work together as a team to select a portfolio of medical grade skincare products with proven clinical results. These are products that we, as a staff, believe in and use ourselves. We understand that some of these products can be expensive and we work hard to tailor a product regimen that meets your budget and skin care objectives.

Do I have to buy expensive products in order to achieve success?
No. We believe that great skin can be achieved at all price points. We will never pressure you to purchase products from us. Having said that, many of the products that we offer are available only to healthcare professionals because they contain numerous active ingredients with proven clinical efficacy. We’re here to help!

I find the exact same products sold cheaper on – why are these products more expensive in your store?
Chances are, they’re not the same product. Most Medical-grade skincare products are authorized to be sold only by registered healthcare professionals. Amazon and other internet retailers are not licensed retailers for these products. What that means is that the products have been diverted and therefore may be diluted, expired or even counterfeit. This issue has become so prevalent, the FBI issued a consumer warning in 2014.

Additionally, they may not be safe to use or perform as tested. Given the active ingredients in these products, we highly recommend that you purchase them from an authorized reseller. Arya Derm takes no responsibility for side effects arising from products purchased at unauthorized retailers.
